Laser hair removal on tanned skin and in summer
The sentence we hear most at the end of August is this: I have a tan, should I pause my laser sessions? The way Soprano ICE Titanium works has changed the answer to that question. Below we explain exactly what the three wavelengths and the Ice Plus cooling do, and where the limit sits.
Why sessions used to pause in summer
The logic of laser hair removal is simple. Light from the device is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, turns into heat, and the follicle is permanently damaged. The problem is that the follicle is not the only structure carrying pigment; the skin itself carries melanin too.
After a week in the sun, the amount of melanin at the skin surface rises. On older devices that work with a single wavelength and one high-energy pulse, part of that energy goes into the upper layer of the skin rather than into the follicle. Redness, dark marks and skin burns come from exactly there. That is why sessions were paused through the summer for years, and why people were told to wait weeks after a holiday.
That rule carried a hidden cost. Hairs are not all in the same growth phase at the same time; the longer the gap between sessions, the fewer hairs are caught in the right phase, and the process stretches out unnecessarily. In other words, the constraint came from the device, not from the hair.
Another common mistake is to think of a tan as something that only happens after a holiday. In Ankara, arms and legs left uncovered from April to October darken without anyone noticing. Under the old rule, that meant no sessions for almost half the year.
Three wavelengths, one applicator, delivered at once
Soprano ICE Titanium is Soprano’s latest ice laser technology. What sets it apart is that it delivers three wavelengths — Alexandrite, Nd:YAG and Diode — simultaneously from a single applicator. No two hair follicles sit at the same depth or have the same thickness; when all three are delivered together, whichever wavelength suits a given follicle is the one that acts on it.
The second decisive element is SHR, gradual heating. The energy is not delivered in one high pulse; while the applicator moves continuously across the area, many low-energy pulses are layered on top of one another. Heat accumulates in the follicle and the target structure around it until it reaches an effective threshold, while the skin surface keeps cooling between pulses. This is the real reason the device can work safely on tanned skin.
- All three wavelengths are delivered in the same session; no second device and no second applicator are needed.
- Fine hair and thick, deep-seated hair are handled in the same pass.
- Gradual heating damages the follicle effectively while the surrounding tissue is protected.
- The 4 cm² applicator makes a session roughly 40% faster, according to the manufacturer’s studies.
- A special applicator is used for hard-to-reach areas such as inside the ear, inside the nose and between the brows.
Ice Plus: the surface stays cold while the follicle heats
Ice Plus cooling keeps the contact surface of the applicator cold throughout the application. Most clients describe not a sharp snap but a warm sensation travelling across the area.
Cooling is not only about comfort. As long as the surface stays cold, the heat load the energy can leave in the upper layer of the skin is limited, and the risk of dark marks and skin burns is markedly lower. Gradual heating and continuous cooling complete each other — without one, the other does not produce the same result.
The application is non-surgical, it does not break the skin’s surface, and it requires no downtime. As soon as the session ends you go back to work, to the gym, to your daily routine.
Tanned skin and all four seasons: what changes in practice
The device is applied safely on every skin type in the Fitzpatrick I–VI range, tanned skin included, and can be used in all four seasons. That wide range is also why it is in use in more than 80 countries.
In practice this means you do not have to pause your sessions when you come back from holiday. You do not need to rebuild the calendar in September, stretch the intervals, or wait for your tan to fade. When the process runs without interruption, a plan of 4–6 sessions is completed within the expected time; months spent waiting usually add to the total number of sessions.
Even so, the condition of your skin is checked before every session. A tan is not in itself a barrier, but the state of the area, the products you use and your health history can all affect the application. The decision is made together, at the first consultation and in the check before each session.
Let us state the limit plainly: white hair follicles
Because the method is built on pigment, laser hair removal does not work on white hair follicles. This is a limit independent of the brand of device, and it applies to Soprano ICE Titanium as well. Any centre that says otherwise is setting the wrong expectation, whatever device it has.
On light blond, red and dark hair types it is effective, and that includes fine hair. If the area has a mixed hair structure — some of it already turned white, for example — we discuss up front which part will respond.
Results vary from person to person. Hair density, the area, hormonal status and skin type all affect both the number of sessions and the outcome. We do not promise anyone a guaranteed result; the exact plan comes out of the measurements and the assessment.
Session plan and how it works at RL
The usual range is 4–6 sessions. Thanks to the wide applicator, small areas such as underarms are finished in minutes; on large areas such as legs and back the time saved is even more noticeable. The interval between sessions is set according to the area and the hair cycle.
At RL Beauty Lounge every application starts with a first consultation. We go through your skin type, your hair structure, the methods you have had before and your health history; we do not suggest an application that is not right for you. We work regularly with male clients on the nape, back, shoulders and chest, and the number of sessions falls in a similar range.
- Sessions: usually 4–6, varying with the area and hair density.
- Skin type: all types I–VI, tanned skin included.
- Season: all four, no need to pause after a holiday.
- Expectation: white hair follicles do not respond, and we say so clearly at the first consultation.
