Localised slimming vs weight loss: what is the difference

Localised slimming and weight loss are often talked about as if they were the same thing. In fact one aims to shrink fat cells in a specific area, the other to bring total body weight down. At RL the two goals are measured separately, but they are usually combined into a single plan.

Two separate goals: one changes the area, the other the total

Localised slimming means the reduction of stubborn fat in a specific area and the shrinking of the fat cells there. The abdomen, waist, hips, inner thigh and arms are the areas we work on most often. Progress is followed with tape measurements and body analysis; the number on the scale says very little in this process.

Weight loss means a drop in total body weight. It requires calorie balance, a nutrition programme, preserving muscle mass and regular measurement. It concerns the whole body, and you do not get to choose where the fat goes from first; that order is largely set by your genetics and your hormonal profile.

Neither replaces the other. If you only lose weight, the stubborn areas usually change last. If you only work locally, the change in that area is hard to see while your overall fat percentage stays high. That is why we usually plan both goals together at the first consultation.

  • Localised slimming: a target area, fat cells shrinking, followed with tape measurements.
  • Weight loss: total weight, a nutrition programme, preserving muscle mass.
  • What they share: both start with measurement, and both are followed with measurement.

Why the scale misleads on its own

Body weight changes even within a single day. Salt intake, anything you take regularly, your hormonal cycle, stress and sleep patterns all cause temporary water retention, and that alone can move the scale by a few kilos.

More importantly, the scale does not separate fat from muscle. If you are losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time, your weight stays almost flat while your measurements and your shape change noticeably. In that situation, someone watching only the scale assumes nothing is happening and abandons the programme halfway.

This is why we take the measurement with a specialist, using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). BIA shows fat percentage, muscle mass, fluid balance and visceral fat separately. The goal is not simply for the weight to fall, but for all of these figures to reach their ideal range.

The RL process step by step

We start from the measurement and the goal, not from the device. The process runs in four steps.

  • First consultation and body analysis: your body mass index and body composition are measured with BIA, with a dietitian present.
  • A personal nutrition programme: built around your measurements, your daily routine and any factors such as insulin resistance or PCOS.
  • Device choice: a specialist decides which technology, or which combination, suits you; the number of sessions and the interval between them follow from that.
  • Weekly measurement: measurements are taken every week with the dietitian throughout the process, and the plan is updated if needed.

The point of the weekly measurement is not to police you, it is to correct the plan early. If fat percentage is falling but muscle mass is falling with it, the protein intake and the exercise side change. If the area measurement is not moving, session frequency or the device combination is reviewed. A deviation spotted in week four costs far more time than the same deviation spotted in week one.

The sessions are non-surgical and the skin’s surface is not broken. There is no downtime; as soon as a session ends you can go back to work, to the gym and to your normal routine.

Which device does which job

There is more than one route to the same result, and which one suits you is decided after the measurements. Every device in the centre is original and its effects are scientifically proven.

It helps to know which device does what: Vanquish ME targets fat cells with contact-free radiofrequency, EMSCULPT NEO and EMBODY work on muscle, X-Wave and EmTone address the appearance of cellulite, and EXION and Exilis Ultra 360 focus on skin quality and firming. The full list, with brand and model names and the questions worth asking, is in how to tell an original device.

Laser hair removal is not on this list, because it is a separate goal. Soprano ICE Titanium delivers three wavelengths (Alexandrite, Nd:YAG and Diode) simultaneously from a single applicator; thanks to SHR and Ice Plus cooling it can be applied all four seasons on skin types I–VI including tanned skin, its 4 cm² applicator makes it roughly 40% faster, and 4–6 sessions are usually planned. What it does not do is work on white hair follicles, and we say so at the first consultation.

Know in advance what happens on the weight side

The first weeks drop fast, because the body uses its glycogen stores first and loses some water along with them. Taking that fast start for the whole of your fat loss sets you up for disappointment in the weeks that follow.

After that the body settles into a new balance; even if you keep the same habits, your weight may not move for a while. This is called a plateau and it is normal. To get past it, these are looked at in order:

  • Reviewing the calorie deficit again — without going below 1,200 calories a day.
  • Raising protein intake, so that muscle mass is preserved while the deficit continues.
  • Increasing the frequency and the intensity of exercise.
  • Sleep patterns and stress management; both act directly on appetite and fluid balance.

We cover the nutrition side separately: plateaus, the calorie deficit and the “cheat day” question are all in how to get past a weight-loss plateau.

Limits and a realistic expectation

Results vary from person to person. The number of sessions, the choice of device and the total duration are set after your measurements, your goal and your health history have been assessed. We do not promise anyone a guaranteed result up front.

A device session is not a solution on its own either. Fat cells shrink, but if the eating and movement routine does not continue, the area can return to how it was over time. What makes the result last is the routine that carries on after the sessions end.

In some situations no application is planned: pregnancy and breastfeeding, a metal implant or a pacemaker in the area to be worked on, an active skin infection and certain chronic conditions are the main ones. Your health history is assessed at the first consultation, and nothing unsuitable for you will be recommended.
